Did you know that your old Christmas lights can be recycled? A program being launched by Crown-ACE Hardware and 1-800-GOT-SCRAP this holiday season will swap your old lights for a $5 gift certificate redeemable for purchases over $20 – and that includes strings of holiday bling. According to Mark Schulein, owner of 17 Crown-ACE Hardware Stores in Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties, newer lights are more energy efficient and safer than some of the older products.

Whether you love rock, pop, MOR, classical or, indeed, heavy metal, music fans of all genres will receive free iTunes gift cards August 1-31 when they take advantage of a new service that’s been described as “recycling on steroids.” During that time, those calling 1-800-GOT-SCRAP to remove unwanted large-scale metal items from their homes will have the traditional $50 pick-up fee waived and will receive a gift card with a value of anywhere between $5 and $25. (Items less than 100 lbs could be subject to a freight charge.)

Figures have been released from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics that shows that the Scrap Recycling Industry had added 10,000 jobs between the first quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011.
We know that the scrap recycling industry is very healthy and poised to expand further, especially if the federal government takes a reasonable and rational regulatory approach that will create thousands of additional jobs,” ISRI President Robin Wiener said. “These new job figures are not entirely unexpected, but they are wholly welcomed.”

The Port of LB company uses Earth Day to encourage recycling on a mega-scale. Owner of SA Recycling, George Adams,
is targeting consumers who want to get rid of old appliances and cars. Today, Earth Day, SA Recycling is officially launching 1-800-GOT-SCRAP, a new service that will pick refrigerators, stoves and other items up. The pickup service, normally available for a $25 fee, is FREE today in honor of Earth Day. Those wanting to avoid the pickup fee can drop off those unwanted appliances at an affiliated recycling center for cash.
